The charts in this section set out the proposed bandwidth requirements for the functions listed. For each of the three environments, two charts are presented, one with the communications from the UAV to the GCS and the other from the GCS to the UAV.

The purpose of these charts is to estimate the overall bandwidth requirements. In order to make a sound bid for bandwidth allocation at the ITU World Radio Conference 2010/2011, these estimates should be as realistic as possible. Assumptions have to be made in specifying the estimates.

Please review the charts and send in (to institute@auvsi.org please) your estimates of what values should appear in the boxes (ie what data rate and what percentage usage in the respective phase of flight)

The general scenario is based on a highly autonomous UAV with a responsible ‘pilot’ with override control in another location (here the term ‘GCS’ is used for the control station). Three environments are proposed, each which might have different bandwidth use requirements:

  • The Terminal Environment, where the UAV is in the proximity of an airport (eg take off, approach, landing)
  • The Point to Point Environment, where the UAV will be flying over ground where communications will be mainly through terrestial networks and relays
  • The En Route Environment where the UAV is flying over remote regions with no local communications networks and where communications will normally be made by way of satellite channels

In all cases, the assumptions of Transparency and Equivalence apply. The Pilot will talk to ATC through the UAV and information collected by the UAV will be forwarded to the Pilot.

Definitions of the functions are based on those used for the Joint JAA/Eurocontrol Task Force work. It is hoped the definitions will be made available to be listed in this site. In the interim, any specific questions concerning definitions should be addressed to institute@auvsi.org.
